Due to the widespread and ongoing nature of piracy among the VOCALOID scene, the name ' POCALOID' has since become synonymous with any illegally-distributed VOCALOID software regardless of its version and vendor. Originally the first known version of any pirated version was called POCALOID. This lead to a crack version being made available among pirating groups. Illegal versions began to gain attention in the early 2007-2009 period when VOCALOID was gaining popularity.
